Go Go Squid! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Updated: Jan 10, 2020

At 19, Tong Nian (Yang Zi) has the whole world at her feet. A brilliant IT programming student, with stellar grades and an equally impressive social media following built around her covers of Japanese songs, Tong Nian never has a problem meeting new people or making friends. But that all changes the day Han Shang Yan (Li Xian) walks into her life.

A genius in his own right, Han Shang Yan is one of the world’s top professional gamers. A legend in the world of esports, Shang Yan is used to living in the spotlight but never once has he let it his position get in the way of his profession. Always working towards that next win, he has never let himself be distracted by the people around him, especially when it comes to women.

Smitten by Hang Shang Yan the moment she first lays eyes on him, Tong Nian tries to find a way to approach her new crush, but can never seem to find the words. Every attempt she makes ends up failing miserably. Cold and uninterested, Shang Yan barely even recognizes Tong Nian’s existence, or so it seems. Could Tong Nian’s persistence catch the eye of a man who sees no one? To Tong Nian it may seem impossible but everyone knows, anything’s possible when it comes to love.

Based on the novel “Stewed Squid with Honey” by Mo Bao Fei Bao, “Go Go Squid!” is a Viki Original 2019 romantic comedy-drama directed by Xiang Xu Jing.

Feelings: First Episode

After watching the first episode, I was not excited to go to the next episode (maybe I was too freshly out of Rookie Historian and didn't pay much attention, but I didn't care to continue. I actually ended up jumping into Ashes of Love [which was a crazy ride - see my post on Ashes of Love]. 63 episodes later I was empty in my cold dead heart once more and in need of a lighthearted fix when I decided to revisit Go Go Squid. I was never not going to watch it but it wasn't my first choice.

Upon re-watching it, my initial thoughts were things like "OMG! It's Jin Mi! How did I not even realize that...." and "Is this actor cute? I can't tell." Luckily because I was literally day 1 out of Ashes of Love, I had already Googled Yang Zi a million times, so she was probably the main incentive for watching the next episodes with 100% captivation. All in all, the first episode did leave me for wanting more - especially after noting the great fashion and cool sets. And because I still was figuring out if I was attracted to Han Shangyan.

Characters

Xian Li as Han Shangyan (Gun)

The minute he un-furrowed his eyebrows, I was like OH HE'S A CUTIE. His acting was good, except I really didn't like when he cried. It didn't make me sad to see him sad but what are ya gonna do? Not everyone is a good crier, that is a really hard thing to fake. Aside from that (and the weird tub scene with Solo) I really liked him. You could really see him fall for Tong Nian and I think that's is what made him handsome Plus he gave some extra rhythm when kissing, which I always appreciate. <3

Zi Yang as Tong Nian (Little squid)

Her character was adorable, fashionable, smart, but refreshingly mature and not annoying. I found her to be interesting, inspirational, and really good at being youthfully cute while not being childish. She portrayed her character falling in love for the first time really realistically. Someone buy me her wardrobe for real!

Zefeng Li as Wang Hao (Solo)

Handsome. Good actor. But really couldn't care about his story though his daughter added a realistic dynamic to the background drama.

Zhen Er Wang as Ai Qing (Appledog)

She annoyed me at times like when she went into the drunk bathroom scene with Solo and Gun and was crying with them and then they were all wet. I thought for sure there was going to be a rekindling between her and Solo but then they threw Wu Bai in the mix and I was like uhhh okay I guess? I honestly thought I missed something in a previous episode.

Hu Yi Tian as Wu Bai (DT)

WHO THE HECK IS THIS MYSTERIOUS GUY?! That is all.

Hong-Chi Lee as Mi Shaofei

I literally could not keep track of who was who until like episode 6. He was dramatic but his cuteness grew on me as soon as they paired up Yaya and him.

Peiyao Jiang as Sun Yaya

Super cute! Loved her half of the dorm, loved her outfits, loved her and Mi.

Ce Wang as Tong's father

Can we just say ZADDY!!! Yasss we can!

Lin Kong as Tong's mother

Who doesn't love a strong caring mom who doesn't have dirty tricks to ruin her child's romantic interests for selfish intent. Definitely pulled off the intimidating parent role. I would be scared of her too! LOL

Qingyan Shi as Lan Mei & Nan Ding as Lan Mei's Husband

They were so adorable. They pulled off cute young married couple perfectly!

Post Feelings: Finishing the Series

Wow! 10/10 show. It was a great watch! They made a really cute couple, I really enjoyed watching the two actors together. They had some excellent cute scenes that will go down in romance drama history. I hope there is a Season 2!
