An ordinary girl is admitted to the most prestigious school in the country where she encounters F4, an exclusive group comprised of the four wealthiest and handsomest boys in the school - Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Xi Men and Mei Zuo.
Shan Cai is an 18-year-old girl from a family that's barely able to make ends meet. Due to a turn of events, she gets accepted into a school that only accepts the upper class elites. She immediately clashes with her classmates especially Dao Ming Si who is spoiled, arrogant and a bully. She remains defiant even after becoming a target of a series of pranks intended to torment her and just when she's about to give up, Hua Ze Lei always seems to show up to lend her a helping hand.
Eventually, the four boys begin to acknowledge Shan Cai's unyielding personality that is like her namesake which is that of a weed that can never be brought down. She also begins to see the good in the boys, which paves the way for friendship and an eventual romance.
Feelings: First Episode
A familiar tale with the help of a Netflix budget. The first episode definitely made me chuckle a couple times and I liked the casting for F4. Shan Cai was ordinary but cute, and Dao Ming Sui was also cute but very young looking. He pulled off the bad boy of F4 well.
Shen Yue as Dong Shan Cai
Her character's personality, at it's base, had a good personality. She’s independent, strong willed, and quick on her feet. Her family relationships are healthy and humble making for a pretty well-rounded girl. All that independence however has caused her to have a heavy guarded heart that she doesn’t even acknowledge until well into the series when her feelings catch up with her. She annoyed me halfway through because she couldn’t make up her damn mind, she was crying all the time, and at some point, she was just being ridiculous. But her moments with Dao Ming Sui were really sweet (when they weren’t lowkey abusive).
Dylan Wang as Dao Ming Si
I didn’t find him to be intimating because he looked so young, but he played a good “bad boy” and a good Dao Ming Sui. I would have kicked his face too. He exhibited a lot of problematic behavior (A LOT) toward Shan Cai, especially since he claimed to like her, but he just wanted to control her. Luckily, it came off as a bad-tempered kid who just had to mature but they were all kind of grown enough where someone should of have been like BRUH chill the f*** out. At the end of the day he was just an annoying twerp who needed to be taught a lesson BUT he was super-duper cute when he wanted to be. If it wasn’t for the good chemistry he and Shan Cai had, I would have not enjoyed it as much.
Darren Chen as Hua Ze Lei
He was so cute (a little to frail for my taste)! He had the demeanor of a cool, reserved, boy with the aura of a pretty woman. A very dainty man indeed but his outfits were on point, he was a good friend while being somewhat of an opponent, and he was overall a genuine and likable character.
Leon Leong as Feng Mei Zuo
Young lad had all the tricks and swagger a grown man should have. Too bad he couldn't tame that cougar lol. But I guess she wasn't a cougar at all...plus that love story was random AF. I want that little house though!
Caesar Wu as Xi Men Yan
This guy *rolls eyes*....guess he needed a persistent little chicky to tell him what he needs.
Li Jia Qi as Jiang Xiao You
Go ahead girl! You get that tea infused D!! That hair cut did wonders for her btw!
Wang Lin as Dao Ming Feng
She was really mean guys...like REALLY mean. Way to mean. She was being so evil, and for what?? She legit let her son starve himself because of some dumb shit. Like I get it, he holds the key for the next generation of Dao Ming but he's intelligent and business savy. Both her children are! They can hold down the fort. I'm glad she left at the end - good, go, BYE wench.
Sun Qian as He Yuan Zi
Honestly, she kept it real which I appreciate. Girl's a mess, but she observed the situation, shot her shot, and was there when needed. I love a good opponent turned ally.
Liu Yin Hao as Chen Qing He
He's not an alpha or a beta....heck I don't even know what he is but he was no match for any of the dudes in Shan Cai's life.
Post Feelings: Finishing the Series
Overall I liked the show. I only saw the Japanese version of this story, Hana Yori Dango, but I definitely read the manga. I just think the entire show could of been cut in half if everyone just sat down and had a long conversation. There were too many misunderstandings that prolonged a resolution. Shan Cai was too wavering on her feelings and Dao Ming Sui was one giant red flag as a potential partner but I digress. They made a super cute couple and they had excellent chemistry. I HIGHkey hope they're dating in real life because I just think they are the cutest. 3 stars because the over used soundtrack made me want to throw my head through my TV and Shan Cai pissed me off. Seriously though, I had to mute scenes sometimes because of those stupid songs OMG >:(
