Due to various personal reasons, a group of Yoon Tae Oh's friends move into his house, where they experience love, friendship, and everything in between. The five friends are Tae Oh, Song Yi, Do Hyun, Ga Rin and Hoon.
Tae Oh and Song Yi have been friends since they were very little. Do Hyun is Tae Oh’s friend. Song Yi and Do Hyun have feelings for each other.
Feelings: First Episode
I kept going past this show in Netflix looking for something to pop out at me, but when I realized that I should just choose something, My First First Love was the one I went with. I was instantly attached to the characters. I mentioned this before but better budget means to better quality and Netflix is obviously successful at making great original series - so long story short - I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed. Honestly the first thing to catch my attention with My First First Love was Choi Hoon (Kang Tae Oh) because he was making really crazy facial expressions that were cracking me up and I had just saw him in The Tale of Nokdu, so I was curious to see how he would pull off this radically different character. I knew the story wasn't going to be the hook for this series and that was okay.
Ji Soo as Yoon Tae Oh
I have never seen this actor before and his looks were shocking in a weird way. I was trying to determine if he was indeed handsome or he was goofy. But lawd he is so DASHING! His features are reminiscent of the 1940's - strong jaw, long face, and extremely masculine like he could be a soldier or a late night talk show host. The character he plays is the sweetest, like a really tall delicious yam. He grapples with his feelings trying to figure it out all by himself for most of the series which can sometimes be annoying depending on the character but he was respectful to the other characters even when he was confused or had no choice but to be a certain way. Tae Oh is a bona fide GENT.
Jung Chae Yeon as Hang Song Yi
Another actress I've never seen before but she was awesome. I liked her character's story, her simplistic prettiness, and her ability to react to some pretty harsh realities in a mature way - when she was kicked out of her house, when she found out who Tae Oh was dating, when she goes to see her mom, when she finds out about Tae Oh's mom, all of these tough truths would have sent me flying off the effin' handle or be a total crying mess. Granted she threw a rock into her mom and new boo's window but she could of done much worse, especially since she was living in a damn tent after an abrupt eviction. I also love when a girl can slap back by just being truthful to petty people like when Se Hyun asked if she saw her assignment and she was like yea b**** Tae Oh worked on it all night. I was yelling to my tv YASSSS GURL! Her friendship with Tae Oh was very authentic and when they morphed into romance it was really cute to see her be a little uncomfortable with being physical and even be surprised by his cuteness like when he stole a kiss after they brushed their teeth.
Jung Jin Young as Seo Do Hyun
He was sweet, reverent, and 100% open with how he was receiving things with Song Yi and Tae Oh. He was feeling certain emotions for the first time while dealing with some heavy real life stuff with his family. I got a vibe that he was always trying to come off more mature than he actually was like how he dressed like an old man with his tucked plaid shirts. The only thing I will say is that it was a little dirty that he secretly dated Song Yi for as long as he did. There was no bros before hoes here and their friendship came off as that type of friendship so it was a bit out of character I thought. But he knew it would force the unspoken feelings of Tae Oh and Song Yi to come out as it did anyway.
Kang Tae Oh as Choi Hoon
His odd facial expressions were cringe-worthy in a good way. He made me embarrassed, he made me laugh, and I was rooting for him to succeed. This guy was straight up getting abused by his father and I didn't know if it was supposed to be a serious scene or not. I quickly realized that the abuse was serious but his character was not. Choi Hoon is just a dramatic and boisterous kind of guy who's determination can't be stopped. The character needed to grow up and find himself and I believe he had one of the more transformative character arcs out of them all, even though he was there mainly for comic relief.
Choi Ri as Oh Ga Rin
What a quirky cutie! I thought she was going to be whatever but she really drew me in. She was funny and had fantastic comedic and serious chemistry with Choi Hoon. Plus her character, though typical, was endearing and pleasant. Would love to see her in something else for sure!
Hong Ji Yoon as Ryu Se Hyun
A petty bitch you can respect. Because she was never really petty, she just talked to Song Yi with major attitude when it was completely unnecessary. Otherwise, she was refreshingly not evil - which is not the norm for this genre. Viewers can clearly see her development throughout the series and get's a glimpse into her back story that wasn't too much or random. She tackles her feelings head on without purposely sabotaging anything. I loved that! Mad RESPECT.
Post Feelings: Finishing the Series
Great watch! Classic slice of life young romance tale but with a Netflix budget. It was a lovely little story that realistically portrayed the complexities of friendships turning romantic and modern dating. It stayed lighthearted even when it touched on some deeper issues like the grey areas of toxic family dynamics and what it means to be a true friend. I hope there is a third season because I just want to see how Tae Oh and Song Yi learn about each other romantically, which is a whole other layer that we didn't get to see. We saw how Tae Oh takes the physical initiatives with little kisses or a passing embrace but I would LOVE to see them enter into true adulthood together. The only series I ever saw do this successfully was the Taiwanese drama It Started with a Kiss.
